Urban Design & Planning: Campus Master Planning

Sustainable Places®, Inc.

The challenge for the Museum Campus Master Plan was to create a unified pedestrian-oriented campus. This plan also needed to highlight the Lake Michigan shoreline location, and enhance the campus as a major tourist destination. The biggest hurtle was the separation of the Field Museum from the other two museums by five lanes of northbound Lake Shore Drive.

The Museum Campus Plan proposed relocation of Lake Shore Drive to west of the Field Museum. In addition, new pedestrian connections to the campus and extensive landscaping were proposed. With the implementation of the proposed improvements, the Museum Campus today is one of the premier tourist destinations in the City of Chicago.
